Keynote: The benefits of setting up an online vaccination registry
Isabelle WACHSMUTH, Project manager at World Health Organization
eHealth facilitates the implementation of online vaccination registries, especially in countries with limited resources. Electronic vaccination registries allow to track the vaccinations of each child as well as the inventory and distribution of vaccines and consumables, and to record this information in a national database. An application for mobile phones has been developed for nurses stationed in the least accessible areas in order to facilitate the scaling up of such an intervention.
The next step, currently under way, consists of developing a more solid and more generic system which could be easily adopted and tailored by many countries and which would be accessible through the Internet and mobile phones. Healthcare professionals will therefore be able to use the technology best suited to their situation. Computers with Internet access and printers will probably be better suited for district offices and large urban care facilities, whereas mobile phones or paper reports will be a better solution for isolated villages.
